Understanding Filing Status for Individuals and Families:

Your filing status affects your tax bracket, standard deduction, and eligibility for credits. Choosing the correct one is essential to filing an accurate return and avoiding unnecessary tax issues.

Why Filing Status Matters

Your filing status determines:
• Your tax rate
• Your standard deduction
• Which credits you can claim
• Whether you’re required to file
• How much tax you owe or get refunded

The Five Filing Statuses

1. Single

You qualify if you are not married, legally divorced, and do not meet the rules for Head of Household.

2. Married Filing Jointly (MFJ)

Most married couples use this status because it offers the highest standard deduction and the most tax advantages. You can file jointly if you were married at any point during the year.

3. Married Filing Separately (MFS)

This status usually results in higher tax and fewer credits but may be appropriate when:
• You want financial liability separated
• One spouse has large medical expenses
• You are dealing with legal or financial issues

4. Head of Household (HOH)

Available if you are unmarried (or considered unmarried), pay more than half the cost of maintaining your home, and have a qualifying dependent. This status offers a larger standard deduction and lower tax rates.

5. Qualifying Surviving Spouse (QSS)

Available for up to two years after your spouse passes away if you have a dependent child and meet household support requirements. This status uses the favorable Married Filing Jointly tax brackets.

Common Filing Status Mistakes

• Selecting HOH without meeting the requirements
• Filing separately when MFJ would reduce tax
• Using Single instead of QSS after a spouse’s death
• Misunderstanding dependent qualifications
• Incorrectly splitting dependents between parents
